There’s nothing that brings festive cheer quite like a Kate Rusby Christmas album. Heralding the build-up to Christmas, an album release and national tour by the Barnsley Nightingale has become as traditional as carol singing, twinkling trees and mulled wine supped by a roaring fireside. Following on from her recently released solo album Philosophers, Poets & Kings, the celebrated folk artist has been back in the studio to record her fifth Christmas album, Holly Head.
Inspired by the name given to a Christmas enthusiast – and none can claim this title more than Kate Rusby herself – Holly Head sees the award-winning folk singer lending her ethereal tones to a new collection of traditional Christmas music, self-penned songs and Yuletide choruses from her native Yorkshire. Kate grew up attending the infamous South Yorkshire Christmas sings – an ancient tradition dating back 200 years which sees the folk of South Yorkshire coming together in pubs to sing their own, unique variations of familiar carols. For her, traditional carols are deeply ingrained like Whitby rock and with a passion for spreading Yuletide cheer, she devotes herself to performing a new collection of songs inspired by family life, her musical heritage and love for this special time of year.
Kate Rusby says, “As a self-confessed “Holly Head” I couldn’t wait to get back in the studio to continue my quest to give people an alternative Christmas playlist. The result is a new collection of songs, some from my beloved South Yorkshire, some from further afield, some my own pen, some you may know, some you won’t.
For me this music is all about singing together, singing with family, singing with those you love, singing with friends, singing with people you’ve never met but just happen to be standing next to in a little pub on a hillside. Christmas is a time of year I absolutely adore because one can throw caution to the wind, stretch out those lungs and with happy heart just pile in. Turn it up and sing along, come and be a proud Holly Head!”
Holly Head will be released on Pure Records on 29 November 2019. Kate Rusby will be performing the album live on national tour.
