2017 BBC Folk Award winners perform at St Mary’s Church, Stogumber,
Innovative folk music band Lady Maisery have toured extensively throughout the UK and Europe. Each of the trio – which consists of Hazel Askew, Hannah James and Rowan Rheingans – are accomplished multi-instrumentalists as well as breathtaking vocalists who perform traditional songs and original compositions.
Underpinning every performance are Lady Maisery’s distinctive harmonies. In addition, the trio are one of the foremost English proponents of mouth music, or “diddling”. Once common in England, and still found across parts of southern and northern Europe, this is a perfect showcase for their sheer musicality.
The group’s third album Cycle was released in October 2016 to rave reviews from the national press. The Guardian called it “some of the most exquisite, thrilling vocal harmony work in the English folk scene”. Last month, a collaborative album with seven other folk singers, Songs of Sensation, won Album of the Year at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
The event takes place in St Mary’s Church (TA4 3TA) at 7.30pm on Saturday, 20th May and tickets, which are priced at £8 and £12 each, are available from the Festival website (www.stogumberfestival.com), by calling 0845 539 0168 or in person at Central Stores, Stogumber.
